144 Chromanticore
Neat card. Too bad it is not
Legendary so it could be an EDH commander.
Standard – 1.0
Limited – 1.0
145 Ephara, God of the Polis
A note on the new gods: They do
not really require seven devotion, they add two devotion to the board by
themselves. Think of it this way: Thassa
requires four other devotion to turn
on, Ephara requires five other devotion
to turn on. The difference is not as big
as it appears at first glance.
Ephara is not the typical UW style card. She is deceptively powerful, if the right
home can be found for her. Maybe some
sort of Bant style deck, or a UW Weenie deck, or even possibly Mono U. Definitely a card to keep your eye on in the
coming standard season. The minor gods
are probably even better than the original gods in limited. It is much easier to get five multicolored
devotion than four mono colored devotion, so they will be active far more
often.
Standard – 3.0
Limited – 4.0
146 Ephara's Enlightenment
I think this will be amazingly annoying in limited, repeatable +1/+1
counters and heroic triggers. Might end
up being a little slow. Could make its
way into constructed in some fringe decks.
Standard – 2.0
Limited – 2.5
147 Fanatic of Xenagos
RG aggressive decks have a new three drop.
Standard – 3.0
Limited – 3.0
148 Karametra, God of Harvests
Karametra is the worst of the minor gods. The best thing to ramp into in standard
currently is Angel of Serenity.
Karametra does not actually help you cast Angel faster than normal. That her ability is so lacking is very sad;
GW is positioned to be the easiest of all color pairs to turn on a god with all
its multicolored creatures. Karametra
will be good in limited since thinning your deck just provides you with more
gas and you are almost always casting creatures.
Standard – 2.0
Limited – 3.0
149 Kiora, the Crashing Wave
I feel like R&D did an excellent job in balancing Kiora. Being a little cheaper or having just one more
devotion could have made her too good.
As she sits now she is very fragile but can still be impactful on a
game. I do not expect her to be more
than a two of value card in most decks that want to play her. She should’t supplant Jace, AoT as the four
mana planeswalker of choice.
Planeswalkers are almost always bonkers in limited.
Standard – 2.5 maybe 3.0
Limited – 3.0
150 Kiora's Follower
Kiora’s Follower is just the kind of niche card that makes magic
special. This uncommon will drive some
people into overdrive to find neat and clever ways to eek out some extra value
through combos. While others will just
say “harder to cast Voyaging Satyr”.
Awesomely they are both right!
There are plenty of things that this merfolk can combo up with. One of the spiciest looks to be Underworld
Connections.
Standard – 2.0
Limited - 2.5
151 Mogis, God of Slaughter
The rock star god of war on the plane of Theros. Be prepared to pay the price of slaughter
sometime during his stay in standard. I
don’t think that the format shapes up very well for him right now. But times do change and I am sure that he
will have his day on stage.
Standard – 3.5
Limited – 4.0
152 Phenax, God of Deceit
You would be deceiving yourself if you thought that Phenax would make
much of a wave in Standard. It will
prove to be a very popular God and maintain value pretty well.
Standard – 1.5
Limited – 4.0
153 Ragemonger
It is a rare card that reduces colored mana costs. I think that minotaur tribal is still a few
cards away from being a legit deck. If
when they print those cards, this will be one of the first cards in the deck.
Standard – 2.5 – 3.0
Limited – 3.0
154 Reap What Is Sown
This will be a staple of the green white heroic deck. Targeting up to three creatures especially if
they are heroic will vastly change the board state. If this card comes around late in a draft it
is a clear sign that GW is wide open.
Standard – 1.0
Limited – 3.5
155 Siren of the Silent Song
I would think that your opponent would get to hear the Silent Song at
least once if you cast this on turn three and maybe twice before they can deal
with it.
Standard – 1.5
Limited – 3.0
156 Xenagos, God of Revels
At face value Xenagos is clearly the most powerful of all the minor
Gods. Most obvious home for him right
away is RG Monsters, likely as a two of.
Will Xenagos be strong enough to help shore up that decks weakness to UW
based control decks? I am not so sure
but it will make that matchup much more difficult for the control player.
Standard – 4.0
Limited – 4.0
157 Astral Cornucopia
While this looks complicated its really just a Darksteel Ingot that can
be proliferated in commander.
Standard – 1.5
Limited – 1.0
158 Gorgon’s Head
This has cheap enough casting cost and equip cost to see some
play. Sedge Scorpion was very good
before BNG, and this lets anyone make anything a Sedge Scorpion. Seems loose but could combo with Izzet
Staticaster in standard.
Standard – 1.5
Limited – 2.0
159 Heroes' Podium
EDH and moving on.
Standard – 0.0
Limited – 0.0
160 Pillar of War
Seems like a lot of work to just get a Nessian Courser.
Standard – 0.0
Limited – 1.0
161 Siren Song Lyre
This will be slower than it appears to get online and tapping, but
invalidating your opponents best blocker and possibly reequipping to tap down
their best attacker is pretty powerful.
Standard – 0.0
Limited – 2.5
162 Springleaf Drum
Will help enable Inspired and five color greedy green decks in
limited. This is not good enough to play
in constructed outside of pauper and affinity.
Standard – 0.0
Limited – 2.0
163 Temple of Enlightenment
164 Temple of Malice
165 Temple of Plenty
Just like the Theros 5, these feel crappy as rares but they are good
enough to play in constructed and you should probably play them in limited if
you have one that is just one of your colors.
Standard – 4.0
Limited – 2.5
